My Love for the Olive - A Genetic Possibility
July 8th 2008 18:57
These days, I can't seem to handle my salt the way I used to. I wake up with puffy hands and fingers from the excess water retention. As a child, I had strange vices. Tomatoes eaten like apples and sprinkled with salt. Boiled artichokes with lemon juice and olive oil. Steamed spinach seasoned with lemon juice and salt. But even with those, I could stop eating them.
And then there was the olive. It didn't matter what kind of olive it was. If it was in the house, I'd eat all of them. Mainly, my mother would buy those cocktail olives with the pimiento stuffed in them. She also had black olives and Kalamata olives in the house. Maybe she knew if she bought me inexpensive jars of Spanish olives, those would satisfy my cravings. She was right. I'd eat the whole jar in one sitting and wouldn't touch the more expensive, imported olives that she and my dad were fond of.
I read in a nutrition book a few years ago that people tend to favor the diets of their ancestors. Even though my family has moved on and is living in an another continent, the genetic food preferences are still there. I don't know if that's true or not. All I know is - I didn't learn to go crazy over olives. I knew the first time that I ate one that it just felt right.
